The word Turquoise comes from the 17th century, when this gem is brought by trading routes from Persia through the Middle East towards Europe. In reference to its coming from Turkey, the locals named this material "Turquies" ("Turkish") when the merchants passed through Turkey, known as "Turquie" in French.
